Jujube (Chinese date or red date) Seedlings

Jujube, also known as Chinese date or red date, is a small, sweet fruit rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, traditionally used for nutrition and medicinal purposes. Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) is a small deciduous tree or shrub in the buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae), typically reaching 5–10 meters in height. It has shiny green, ovate leaves with three prominent veins at the base and finely toothed margins. The small yellowish-green flowers are about 5 mm wide. The fruit is an edible oval drupe, 1.5–3 cm long, smooth and green when immature, maturing to brown or purplish-black and eventually wrinkled, resembling a small date. Each fruit contains a single hard kernel with two seeds, sometimes called zui zao or “drunk jujube” when fermented or processed. Jujube is remarkably adaptable, but understanding its preferences helps optimise production.  The tree grows well between 15°C and 35°C. It tolerates high heat and can survive brief cold spells down to -10°C, making it suitable for diverse Kenyan regions from the Coast to Central highlands. Jujube needs 500 to 1,500 mm of annual rainfall. It survives on as little as 500 mm but produces better yields with 700 to 1,000 mm. In drier areas, supplementary irrigation during flowering and fruit development significantly increases yields.  The tree grows from sea level up to 1,700 metres. Coastal, Eastern, and Central Kenya are all suitable. Higher altitudes bring cooler temperatures, which slow growth but do not prevent fruiting. Full sun (6 to 8 hours daily) is essential for optimal fruiting. Shaded trees produce poorly. Well-drained sandy loam or loamy soils with a pH of 5.5 to 7.5 are ideal. Jujube tolerates poor, shallow, and even slightly saline soils where other fruit trees cannot grow. However, waterlogged soils cause root rot and must be avoided.
